Aalia Mujtaba’s Jewelry Highlights

Many of the pieces pictured below can be recreated, but some pieces with unique stones cannot. Aalia would be happy to meet with you to discuss how to create a custom piece of jewelry inspired by some of the one-of-a-kind items pictured. Please feel free to call her, (404) 216-6870, or email her (aalia_m@yahoo.com), if you are interested in purchasing her work or commissioning her for a custom piece.

Debut Solo Show

October 21 & 22,

Friday 5PM-8PM & Saturday 10AM-5PM

Elaina Designs, 675 Drewry St. NE #8 , Atlanta, 30306

You’re in for a treat at Elaina Designs this weekend! My treasured assistant, Aalia, came to me as technical support for my website but her incredible talent as a metalworker who had been teaching silversmithing and creating her own designs for 10 years was quickly apparent. Her work excites me because it’s modern, yet speaks of ancient techniques; a rare blessing in this age of rapid fire production. Her silver forms are pierced and forged with a delicate yet bold mastery that is finely crafted, playful, easy to wear, and affordable, especially in light of the intense hand labor.

Though Aalia’s work is primarily focused on the manipulation of metal, while working with me she has been exposed to the added element of light and color in the mineral world. There are several pieces in her new collection that draw inspiration from our fruitful collaboration. Lapidary Journal featured our burgeoning partnership at Elaina Designs in their August 2011 issue.

Come out this weekend as we celebrate Aalia’s new collection of work and her first one-woman show. The opening party is Friday night, October 21, 5PM-8PM and the show continues through Saturday 10AM-5PM. Select pieces will be on display at Studio 8 through the Holidays.

Inspiration for Father’s Day

My Papa’s exquisite sense of rhythm inspires me. I believe that it is because of him that I keenly recognize the tempo in nature, music or while dancing to the beat as he taught me to do. With a joyous attitude, he turns 99 in September 2011 and is still able to move freely about in this glorious planet.

As evening descends on my NY barn studio, I listen to the frog chorus and watch the mating fireflies perform a spectacular light show. Hundreds of blinking and aural cadences bring shapes and possible gemstone arrangements to my mind’s eye.

Deep gratitude floods over me for my Papa who taught me not only to swim and to dance, but to listen, observe and create rhythmic beauty in  everyday life. At its best, my jewelry is flooded with this resonance.

When I surprised him last week with a visit with two of his grandchildren, Orion and Zoe, he was already dressed for bed but totally up for it. After three hours of eating and talking with Zoe and Orion, we headed home.

The car radio was on loud so he could hear it. He smiled and said, “I love listening to all these modern songs and remembering all the wonderful food we ate tonight. America is just the best place to live!”

His fingers and head tapped the beat in perfect unison, as we enjoyed the ride back to his assisted living facility.

With joie de vivre, I know how blessed I am to be able to celebrate Father’s Day with my dearest Papa.

Mineral Murmurings: Spring Equinox 2011

Dear Friends,

With so much information roaring at us, beauty is restorative. It massages our brains. In the Southern US we cannot recall a more exquisite show of early fruit tree blossoms beneath a more perfect full moon than presented last weekend. As an artist, grief, fear, joy and prayer pour onto my workbench as offerings.  I bow to the Earth as she buckles and shudders in cataclysmic events that may restore balance within, yet wreak havoc upon her surface. We are all on a wild and rocky ride.
