Inspired NEW Designs, Holiday Hours & Lainey’s Sickness

“Lunar Night” NecklaceLapis Lazuli, Pyrite Fossils, Rainbow Hematite & Fat Pearls whispered full moon breath over the Alaskan fiords, and spun themselves into an orbit necklace. Sterling, 17″. $1800.00
Dear Clients & Friends (one and the same),
The show at the High Museum was a success on December 3rd, but the following Tuesday I suddenly became quite ill with high fever and heavy chest pain. Recently, I had become aware that my immune system was not functioning properly, but had hoped to stagger through the holidays. Instead nasty pneumonia hit me hard, with yet another lung problem for the fifth time in this calendar year alone. This is the result of a serious condition called ‘Common Variable Immune Deficiency’ from which I have suffered, unknown to me for 30 years.
So this is a hard message to write, because I am writing to say I cannot meet with you in person until January 11, 2012 though I am woking closely with Studio 8 by email, phone and Skype to make certain Elaina Designs continues to serve your needs this season. I hate it, because I love the holidays, and the chance to see or talk to all of you. Surrendering to this new discipline of rest is tender, because I design all year to make certain that my inventory is at its best right now and that there is enough selection right up to the end. And it is great this year!
You may be unaware, but as an artist, I hold many of you as models in my mind’s eye as I design and purchase colored gems and pearls throughout the year. So, missing your delight when you actually return again to purchase is difficult for both of us, because you are part of the ongoing creative process.  Being present to serve you, and marveling at the wonders of the mineral kingdom to be re-invented from your heirloom jewelry, or finding that perfect stone that squeals, “Ah ha” for your loved one makes my heart sing. I miss you. The illuminating aspect is that Aalia and I have become a team, and if any of you need my input, I am here for you, through the wonders of technology.

Elaina Designs is definitely open for Holiday drop-in shopping Monday through Saturday 10-4PM closing Dec 23-25.  The week after, we are happy to meet with you for returns, or shopping, but by appointment only Dec 26-Jan 11. Please call the office, or Aalia’s cell phone 404-216-6870, to arrange an appointment.

My plan is to be well by 1-11-12, on the second Wednesday in January. On Dec. 28, I receive the first intravenous transfusion of immunoglobulins that will begin to rebuild my puny antibody army that should be trained to fight off colds, viruses, bacteria and parasites. It is a transfusion of blood but without the red part, and will empower the return of strength and stamina. Yahoo, I am lined up for a miracle! One important lesson this sickness has proven is that with technology and a gifted assistant, I can work on many aspects of jewelry from the safety of my microbe-free home.  And bask in the love.

I want to share my latest designs which flowed from high levels of creative energy and delightfully deligent hard work this past fall.  These particular pieces emerged in a stream from a number of muse-lit late nighters and weekends as I pondered, and poked through the glittering minerals and jewels. “Okay now, who wants to come forth, and who wants to be with whom?”

“Practicing the Art of Lightness” Necklace Baroque Pearls, Tourmaline, Hematite, Pink Spinel. A dance across  my Ithaca Pond seen through the early morning mist. 14KT Pink Gold, Sterling, 17.5″, $2300.

“Rainbow Diva” Pendant: Watermelon Tourmaline, Pink Spinel, Rainbow Hematite. She emanated prismatic colors from her complex watermelon tourmaline head, so I gave her an iron strong body with attitude. 14KT Pink Gold, 14KT Green Gold, Sterling. $800.00
“IcyBlueBerg” Earrings:  Blue Zircon and Moonstone Earrings that evoke translucent turquoise icebergs floating in the aftermath of a huge glacial sigh. Sterling, $525.00

“Bathed In Pink” Bracelet: Patsyite, Watermelon Tourmaline, Golden Beryl, Pearl. Inspired by Ann Schnur (first wife to our beloved husband David,) on what would have been her 64th birthday. Four years ago, she had requested to be “bathed in pink jewels”. This tribute to her is the third bracelet in this series, and the first that is not a commission. Sterling, 7″, $3000.
That’s it for now. Make Merry.
Signing off feeling merrier than you might imagine.

Lightness,
Lainey

“The aim is not to be healthy, but to practice the art of Lightness.” quote by Susan Alexjander, Composer/Artist

Jean Rollins’ Home Jewelry Show 2/13/11

Lainey is very excited about meeting you all at my home on February 13, 5PM – 8:30PM! She is attending the Tuscon Gem and Mineral Show January 31 – February 5 and will be returning with some delicious gems and pearls to incorporate into her unique designs this year.

Take a look at some interesting custom jobs Elaina Designs completed in 2010.  These designs show the wide array of jewelry that she makes. When she designs with the intent to upscale your diamonds, pearls and old jewelry, the limitations of what you bring provides an exciting challenge.  Her intent is to create versatile jewelry that is wearable and lovely with perhaps special meaning for you.

Laura K’s Happy Earrings

18KT white gold Diamond Studs were a gift from her husband with sentimental value, but Laura loves color! Using the original diamond settings, we added hot pink tourmaline and sizzling peridot that swing in 14KT Rose Gold.

Diamond and Sapphire Enhancer for June

June loves antique jewelry and had requested an Enhancer to wear on her 8 mm Round Pearls. As a Christmas surprise, her mother supplied the gems from outdated family jewelry. We melted the gold to pay for most of the labor and decided upon a floral motif set in silver to offset the high labor cost. The Enhancer has a timeless elegance that June can enjoy for a lifetime of wear, plus the sentiment of gems that were worn by her mother and grandmother.

18KT Necklace for Susan S.

Susan came to me with several pieces of jewelry she no longer wore to be melted down.  One piece was too interesting to melt and I suggested a necklace that would save the intricate handiwork in an 18KT Diamond Pin she had inherited, but never worn.  She also had a tassel chain that worked perfectly as the necklace. We cut the pin into sections, saving the delicate gold work around each diamond and selected two flower components from an outdated bracelet to soften the hard edges around the cut up pin sections. Filigree elements were also added to maintain the integrity of the original pin design and give each section grace where it is soldered to the chain.  It moves, sparkles, is sexy and fun.

Asymmetrical Diamond Earring Jackets for Jane T.

Jane had unremarkable Diamond Rings she had inherited, but wanted earrings with elegance with artistic flair.  But she also needed simple gold earrings that she could wear everyday. I suggested my small Teardrop Hinged Earrings for everyday wear, and designed the Platinum and 14KT White Gold Danglie Diamond Jackets for occasions that call for pizazz.  We used her old settings to save on cost.

18KT Handmade Clasp for Susan P

Susan had Mikimoto Pearls her husband had given her years ago, but the strand was short and had no impact. On a trip to China, she had purchased a second strand of pearls that nearly matched her originals, and wanted them mixed in to make one long strand. We removed tiny diamonds from uncomfortable rings and old clasps, and melted the gold to put towards labor cost.  The new 64” strand of pearls are knotted on silk and can be worn doubled or tripled to showcase the handsome heavy 18KT Handmade Clasp. This makes a statement.

Wes B’s Wedding Band

Wes and his wife have been married for decades, but he never had a wedding ring.  Ready for one now, he wanted something special.  He had inherited gold cuff links and other jewelry that was not his style, and decided to melt it all down. After creating several pairs of custom earrings for his wife, paid for from the gold melt, we still had money to spare for his wedding ring.  He selected a rare Rainbow Moonstone with natural color-change Alexandrite that hop from green to turquoise in different light. 14KT Green Gold looked best on his skin and complimented the gems.  The ring has an earthy hand textured pattern and a mysterious glow, like all well seasoned relationships.

We look forward to seeing you Sunday, February 13, 5PM-8:30PM!

Inman Park Festival News

Many of you have written to ask how the Inman Park Festival went last weekend? I decided to give an official report: We did great! Sales were solid both days, despite the torrential deluge from the heavens and the small stream running through our tent for most of Saturday. Sunday was sunny and hundreds streamed by on the street, rather than water streaming around our feet. Many old and new client/friends found and stayed to oooohhh and ahhhh at the beauty inside our little brightly lit tent-universe. Deep appreciation to those who went the extra distance and purchased a piece of jewelry. Sarah, Mandi and I have been working seven days a week for months in preparation. The Inman Park Festival was a sweet success.

Included is a photo of the Elaina Designs team of tireless workers who set up, sold and broke down the heavy two-car load of stuff I had compiled to make our booth beautiful, the jewelry electrified so that it sparkled, and all of us cozy and snug. This was my first outdoor sales venue in 25 years, and no way would it have happened without them. In truth, it made me realize that I am not a very portable woman. I need lots of rocks to make my world rock. Thank you!!!! From left to right: Orion Hanson (my son,) Zoe Van Nostrand (my baby daughter who is graduating High School from Paideia in two weeks and attending Hobart and William Smith College) Mandy Reinshagen, my new apprentice leaving soon for Colorado School of Mines, Sarah Puerto my 3 year Everything Technical Assistant who will be graduating Emory University this summer, and her boyfriend and Elaina Designs Web Master, Thomas Lodato who is graduating with his Masters from Ga Tech and beginning his PhD in the fall . The beautiful jewelry and this terrific support team along with a happy clientele made it a magical experience.

VA-HI Summerfest this Weekend & Updates

Happy Days,

Southeast US is enjoying a cool, lovely spring like those I recall  from my childhood playing in Fernbank Forest…green, lush, with wafting aromas from honeysuckle.  Allergies aside, it’s been inspirational. The result is colorful, affordable jewelry in Vermeil and Sterling (see photos).  But the ongoing oil spill is terrible for our watery friends, and brings a deeper appreciation for gems that grow in saltwater and depend upon the delicate balance.  With our oceans in peril, my new series makes homage to our precious planet Earth incorporating Native Turquoise, Pearls, especially Saltwater Pearls, Red Coral and Petrified Coral.

Gratefully, many of you have been purchasing online or directly from me, and trading in your old gold to create a fresh piece of Green Restyled Jewelry.  Thank you, and keep it coming.  I do ship the same day you place an order for next day delivery, if needed.  Gold is at the highest ever, bouncing beyond 1200/ounce.  This plays havoc on jewelry inventory that I design months ahead, made for prospective buyers at my shows, but it is good for those who are purchasing gold pieces that are already made based on old gold prices. Many of you have gotten some fantastic deals over the past year and a half.

My youngest baby, 17 year old Zoe Irene, just graduated from Paideia High School and received the Service Award.  She volunteered and gave about a thousand hours of her free time to create meals for the Homeless, and to help families living in shelters.  As a very proud Mom my nest is empty.

The best tonic for the vacuum that Zoe leaves will be lazy undirected time to spend in my studio, playing.  I have been raising kids for 32 years, and much of my energy has revolved around the needs of my kids. As an artist, I gaze happily ahead, as a mother, I am weeping. Who knows what my Jewelry will hatch in the months and years to come?

I look forward to seeing some of you at these upcoming shows:
